Guys, Zac Efron told me he feels insecure in a bathing suit sometimes. Can you believe it? Zac freaking Efron. I know, it seems crazy. This is nothing against Zac, but seeing as how the media has painted him out to be a buff god among men for years, you’d think he worships his own body more than I worship a late night Taco Bell run.

Believe me, I love when celebrities open up about body image.
I was the queen of reporting on body image issues back when I was working at VH1. But I’ve come to realize that dudes don’t get asked about body image nearly as much as women do. Ain’t that a little sexist? Why should body image issues and feeling “confident” just pertain to women, as if men don’t feel insecure too? Most stories about male celeb bodies are all about getting ripped and all manly-man. Rawr. Here are some about Zac, specifically:
- “The Zac Efron workout to get a beach-ready ‘Baywatch’ body”
- “Zac Efron got so insanely jacked even The Rock thinks he’s an ‘animal.’ Here’s how.”
- “Zac Efron’s Body Transformation From Lanky Teen Heartthrob to Baywatch Stud”
We get it, guys.
So, I wanted to prove a point. I did it with Zac Efron as my subject.

Before the premiere of Baywatch, a franchise that has celebrated (arguably) unattainably perfect bodies for years, I wanted to see if and how Zac and his cast members felt bathing suit insecurities like the rest of us average peasants. Because let’s be real:
Most of us don’t look like the Baywatch cast in bathing suits.

By asking Zac and his male and female co-stars the same question about feeling insecure in a bathing suit and seeing their similar (and crazy honest) responses levels the playing field. Not to sound all Mr. Rogers, but I feel like it equalizes men and women and proves we’re all insecure about one thing or another, and that’s OK.
Even if you are Zac Efron.
