I Made Christian Bale Tear Up on the Red Carpet: Here’s the Story

in Behind the Scenes, Relationships on 12/21/17

New career highlight: inadvertently making Christian Bale tear up in public. Bless.

Here’s what happened.

I was covering the red carpet for the LA Hostiles premiere (a serious, gritty war movie à la usual Christian Bale). The movie, about white men and Native Americans, tackles racism head-on, making obvious social commentary given the backdrop of our current political climate. Needless to say, reporters jumped all over this, using their one precious question with Christian Bale on Trump, politics, etc. etc. But everyone was asking him, and I wasn’t about to get the same response.

While I was waiting for Christian to make his way down to my end of the carpet, I couldn’t help but notice his wife Sibi happily awaiting behind him while he did all of his interviews. That takes patience, I’m sure. If that’s not love, I don’t know what is.

After witnessing his wife Sibi in action, I threw him an unexpected curveball.

When Christian was finally in front of me, I thought it would be fascinating to actually not make the interview about him. (Because how often does he get that?) I asked him to turn around to look at his lovely wife watching him do his thing and I asked him about her — how she supports him in Hollywood craziness (that I witness every day) and what makes her such an amazing partner (besides the obvious). He started answering, giving a knee-jerk response and immediately saying he respects that she keeps their private life private and whatnot.

But then he really thought about it, took a long pause, and started tearing up.

It was EVERYTHING. “She’s probably the most strong woman I’ve ever come across in my life,” he said, getting choked up. “And I — You’re making me all tearful! I’m too much of a softie! I don’t think I am, but then you got me with that!”

The little cry sesh ended up in Us Weekly, which I was working for that night, and I’m not sure if I’ve ever felt more accomplished than making Batman get all choked up:

More than anything, it definitely taught me to trust my gut.

Meanwhile, here I am thinking about who I can make cry next:

Any ideas?
