I will never not be fascinated by the shit show that was the Fyre Festival. Naturally, I immediately watched the Hulu and Netflix documentaries as soon as they came out, trying to wrap my head around how the hell so many layers of that mess could actually unfold like they did.
What’s craziest to me is that it was purely the power of Instagram visuals, models, influencers, and marketing, that so easily persuaded “rich millennials,” if you will, to want to get in on the action of this boughie, new, Instagrammable event. (The fact that millennials so badly want to BE part of that action is a whole other fascinating and sad phenomenon in and of itself.)
Just when the docs were coming out, I had the opportunity to talk to a handful of super successful influencers, Jeannette Odgen of Shut the Kale Up, Sophie Jaffe, and Dr. Mona Vand, to get their input. How does it actually feel being someone who can so easily influence other peoples’ behavior? Does it make them angry or annoyed when other influencers aren’t using their power positively? Should their followers really hang to every thing they say?
